There are several theories on eel gender. Early Greeks and Romans believed that eels were born alive and reproduced. The Greek naturalist, Aristotle, was one of the first to put forward a theory about eels. During the Middle Ages, a man named Albertus Magnus heard fishermen tell him that the eels had a sex or a male and female form. He concluded that eels could not reproduce without sperm.

To determine an eel’s gender, look at its gonad. The gonad is an important feature in identifying an eel’s gender. Compared to the genitals of a human, an eel’s gonad is flat and narrow, resembling a ribbon of tissue. The gonad is located on the back of the eel’s head and is a prominent characteristic.

In later life, Freud did not mention the eel’s testes.
